The Hercules Carbide tools are the best choice for beginners. The Hercules Woodturning series are robust and hard working tools yet have a soft touch for both delicate and heavy duty work. This tool is used flat like a scraper. The square shank helps you maintain tool position. The carbide cutter has the bevel angle built in. There is a 45 degree shaft bevel angle to allow rolling the tool on edge for bevel supported cuts.

Turning Tools The 1/2” diameter tool is the first choice for turning bowls. Use the same tool for rough turning as well as finishing turning. This is an efficient tool that removes wood very quickly and will produce outstanding finishes prior to sanding.

The Badger #5 straight tool was designed for the box makers and turner in mind, who like to work on smaller but deep vessels. The # 5 features a 5/8 shank tapering down to a 3/8 cutter so you can extend further over the rest without vibration and chatter enabling the turner to smooth out those deep vessels and boxes. The accessories for the # 5 tool are the same components for the # 3 Hunter Tools.

1 Hunter Carbide Hercules – This carbide woodturning tool is a great tool for the outside diameter of small bowls, platters and vases. The # 1 Hercules is also a good choice for open form hollowing such as a bowl. Pen turners enjoy using this tool especially on all of the new plastic impregnated turnings that are now available.

3 Hunter Carbide Hercules – This carbide wood turning tool is also a great tool choice for the outside diameter of larger bowls, platters and vases. The # 3 Hercules is a good choice for open form hollowing such as a bowl. This tool has the same geometry as the # 1 Hercules except that it uses a larger # 3 cutter.

The Hunter Carbide Woodturning # 1 Taper tools were designed by Mark St. Leger, a noted box maker. They are to be used on vessel’s 3” tall max and smaller. These # 1 Taper Tools can be used to rough out hollow forms, but the best use is for finishing and final form shaping as shown on the illustration. The # 1 Straight tool will clean up the bottom, the # 1 Hook Tool will clean up the sides and then the hardest cut for any turner is to clean up the shoulder which the # 1 Shoulder or Back tool is designed to reach.

The components or accessaries for the # 1 Taper Tools are the same for the # 1 Cutters. These tools have a 3/8” round shank and are available without handles or with a 12″ turned handle.

To review ornament globes from various known turners, a common thread is the globe outside diameter is about 2 1/4″ and the globe outside height is about 1 1/2.” Most turners will hollow ornament globes through a 5/8″ or 3/4″ diameter opening.

To make a globe with these dimensions, the only tools needed are the # 1 Taper Straight and # 1 Taper Back tool. It is a pleasing form for the globe and it is amazingly easy to hollow a globe with these two tools. Just open up the bottom with the # 1 Straight tool and then using the # 1 Taper Back tool, clean up under the shoulder to the major diameter on the inside of the globe.

The Hunter Swan Necks are real problem solvers. With practice, you will have very little sanding to do. By the way, the harder and more dense the wood the better the Hunter tool seems to like it.

The # 5 Full Swan Neck is a larger version of the #3 tool, measuring about 10″ long and with a shaft width of 5/8″. This tool is especially useful for turning boxes and the insides of all hollow forms. It is manufactured from the standard # 5 tool, but with the distinctive swan-neck. The tool comes with the #3/5 carbide cutter and wrench.

Osprey This may be the last bowl / spindle gouge you will ever buy. There are two sizes: – The small one uses the popular # 1 Hunter Cutter fabricated on a 3/8″ round shank – The larger tool uses the # 2 Hunter Cutter and is fabricated on a 1/2″ round shank

The Hunter Tool components consist of the cutter, screw and torx wrench. Each part is matched to the specific size. For example, the # 1 cutter uses the # 1 screw and the # 1 wrench. All tools are shipped complete and ready to use. Be careful when changing the cutter as “Murphy’s Law” is: “The screw will fall in the chips and you will not find it.” Even though the cutters last a long time, it is recommended to purchase a spare cutter for use as needed. It is very common for wood turners to purchase Hunter Carbide components to manufacture their own tools. Below is useful to order specific components needed to fabricate the tools. Use the table below for sizing.
